The legal status of AI-generated images and videos remains largely unresolved; therefore, CUP journals do not permit their use in publications. The fast-moving sphere of Generative AI in creating images poses new issues. CUP, as publisher, follows the current copyright laws and publication ethics very closely.
The usage can be regarded under the following circumstances:
The products created with the help of AI tools, which are trained on clearly defined scientific data that can be attributed correctly, checked, and proven right under all ethical, copyright, and usage terms, will be produced, as long as all the ethical, copyright, and usage rules are observed.
Images or artwork that are obtained through agencies with which we have signed contractual agreements must be created in a legally acceptable way. Images or videos included in articles specifically focused on AI may be evaluated separately on a case-by-case basis. Not every AI tool can be classified as generative AI.
When submitting the image, the use of non-generative machine learning methods should be disclosed by including it in the image/figure caption. These cases will be evaluated individually.
This policy will be revised and updated on a regular basis as the area keeps advancing.
